Audio Guide

The official Historic Environment Scotland audio guide, in 11 languages, included free with every ticket. Covers around 30 stops across the entire precinct including the Honours of Scotland, the Great Hall, St Margaret's Chapel and the Scottish National War Memorial. ~90 minutes of content.

Steward Precinct Tour

Free 30-minute tour of the castle precinct led by a Historic Environment Scotland steward. Daily, no booking required — check the times at the Gatehouse on arrival. The fastest way to orient yourself.

Royal Mile + Castle Combo

Small-group walking tour combining the Royal Mile with skip-the-line castle entry and 90 minutes inside. Most also visit St Giles' Cathedral and the Real Mary King's Close. The smartest way to see the Old Town in half a day.

Tattoo Experience

Combine castle entry with a Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo ticket — the world's most famous military music festival, performed on the Esplanade every August. Tickets sell out 6+ months in advance.

Which tour should I pick?

For most first-time visitors, the free audio guide is enough on its own — it's included with every ticket, covers the entire route, and you can stop and replay segments as long as you like.

If you want context for everything you're seeing, the free steward-led precinct tour running several times a day from the Argyle Battery is excellent — a Historic Scotland staff member walks you through the major sights with stories you won't find in the audio guide. No booking, just check the times at the Gatehouse on arrival.

For something more comprehensive, a Royal Mile + Castle small-group walking tour with a Blue Badge guide is the smartest way to see the Old Town if you only have half a day in Edinburgh. Most tours start at the Castle Esplanade, walk down the Royal Mile to Holyrood, and stop at Gladstone's Land, St Giles' Cathedral and (with separate tickets) the Real Mary King's Close.

Guided Tours FAQ

Languages, group sizes, and what is included

In which languages is the audio guide available?
English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Dutch, Russian, Mandarin Chinese, Japanese, Korean and Portuguese — 11 languages in total. A British Sign Language version is also available, and a dedicated family audio guide for children.
Do I need my own headphones?
No — the audio guide is provided on a dedicated handheld device with disposable earphones at the entrance, included free with every ticket. Headphones are also for sale at the entrance shop if you prefer your own.
How big are the small-group walking tours?
Most independent tours cap at 12–20 visitors plus the guide. Walking parts inside the castle keep groups together with headsets. Some companies run private bespoke tours from one to ten people, at a higher per-person rate.
Is admission included with a guided tour?
Yes — guided tour packages with skip-the-line entry always include castle admission. You don't need to buy a separate entry ticket. Some Royal Mile walking tours stop at the Esplanade without entering the castle — read the inclusions carefully before booking.
Can I cancel a guided tour?
Yes — free cancellation up to 24 hours before the tour starts. After that, the booking is non-refundable. Tours can also be rebooked free of charge if the castle closes unexpectedly.
Are private tours available?
Yes — several Blue Badge guides offer private bespoke tours of the castle and Royal Mile, typically £200–400 per group of up to 8 people for a half-day. The rate is per group rather than per person and includes admission for all participants.
Is the guided tour wheelchair-friendly?
A free mobility vehicle takes wheelchair users and companions from the Esplanade to Crown Square. Once at Crown Square, level paved access connects the Royal Palace, the Great Hall and the Scottish National War Memorial. Some areas including St Margaret's Chapel have steps. See our accessibility page for full details.
Can I take photos during the tour?
Yes — photography for personal use is welcome throughout the castle, including the Crown Room. Flash is not permitted inside St Margaret's Chapel or the Royal Palace state rooms. Drones are banned anywhere within Edinburgh Castle.
